The speech from the Climate March, held on August 11th, is in English below.
”Jag är här idag som ordförande för Finlands Natur och Miljö, men framför allt som en bekymrad medmänniska på vår gemensamma planet. Jag vill börja med att tacka er för att jag fått denna möjlighet att tala till er idag, och för det inspirerande arbete ni alla gör på Regeneration. Ni hjälper till och kämpar för vår planet, när många har visat att de inte bryr sig, och visar oss att en bättre värld inte bara är nödvändig utan också möjlig genom internationella samarbeten och kunskapsutbyten.
Forskningen talar ett klart och obestridligt språk: vi står inför en klimatkris av historiska proportioner. Forskningsrapporter visar, dagligen, att våra globala ekosystem håller på att kollapsa tidigare än väntat på grund av snabbare och mer oförutsägbara faktorer. När vi börjar omfatta alla de myriader av exploateringskombinationer av våra ekosystem kan man snabbt se att vi håller på och utrotar oss själva och en stor del av allt liv på jorden.
Under sommaren har vi även sett de globala temperaturerna stiga, vi har till och med varit över 1,5 grader och de marina värmeböljorna bara fortsätter. Vi har fortfarande lång tid kvar av 2023 som forskare varnar att kan bli det varmaste året någonsin registrerat. Detta är vår verklighet. Och ändå verkar våra nuvarande politiker inte agera med den brådska och det engagemang som situationen kräver.
Det nyligen utgivna regeringsprogrammet i Finland är ett exempel på detta. Trots att det är lovande att se att miljöfrågor finns på agendan, är det tyvärr inte tillräckligt. Vi behöver mycket starkare och ambitiösare mål. Vi behöver en fullständig energiomställning som tar hänsyn till både mänskliga och naturliga behov och det krävs framför allt handling och verktygen för att handla. Att regeringsprogrammet även minskar invandring och mottagande av klimatflyktingar ser jag som ytterst problematiskt. Vi behöver välkomna våra medmänniskor från andra håll i världen för de besitter kunskap och perspektiv som vidgar våra vyer och gör oss mer ödmjuka. Klimat och biodiversitetskrisen är global och då kan vi inte stänga våra gränser och känslor.
Jag hoppas att vår nya landskapsregering har kuraget att ta itu med de nödvändiga och bokstavligen ”brännande” frågorna. Åland har möjlighet att vara ett positivt exempel för hela Europa och världen bara man bestämmer sig för att jobba och handla aktivt för det.
I denna omställning behöver vi också se till att vi tar hand om vår planet och vår biodiversitet på ett hållbart sätt. Detta innebär att vi måste skydda våra skogar, hav, ängar, naturområden och våra vattensystem, vilka är avgörande för vår planets hälsa och vår överlevnad. Östersjön är vårt närmaste och tydligaste exempel. Östersjön mår riktigt dåligt och samtidigt exploaterar vi dessa knappa resurser till resiliens så att återhämtning blir än svårare att uppnå. Vi måste både skydda och hjälpa, det är vår plikt som invånare och framtidens planetskötare.
Just nu bromsas omställningen till en resilient ekonomi genom att medel saknas till naturinkluderade lösningar. Vi såg en stor återplantering av träd efter romarrikets fall, där man började arbeta regenerativt och permakulturellt med att bygga ekosystem som helhet. Denna metod gav både människor och andra arter möjlighet att återhämta sig och skapade förutsättningar för liv. Vi behöver återgå till denna typ av tänkande och handling.
Framtiden är här, och det är dags för oss alla att stå upp och ta ansvar. Vi måste skapa ett samhälle där alla röster hörs och respekteras, oavsett kön, etnicitet, socioekonomisk bakgrund eller ålder. Ett samhälle där alla har tillgång till rena och hälsosamma miljöer, och där ingen lämnas efter i kampen mot klimatförändringar och förlusten av biologisk mångfald. För att citera Socrates: “The secret of change is to focus all your energy not on fighting the old but on building the new” Tack!”
”I am here today as the Chairman of Finlands Natur och Miljö. But above all as a concerned citizen of our shared planet. I want to start by thanking you for giving me this opportunity to speak to you today, and for the inspiring work you all do at Regeneration. You are helping and fighting for our planet, when many have shown they don’t care, and showing us that a better world is not only necessary but also possible through international cooperation and knowledge sharing.
The science speaks a clear and undeniable language: we are facing a climate crisis of historic proportions. Research reports show, on a daily basis, that our global ecosystems are collapsing earlier than expected due to faster and more unpredictable factors. When we begin to understand all the myriad combinations of exploitation of our ecosystems, it is easy to see that we are in the process of exterminating ourselves and much of the life on Earth.
The summer has also seen global temperatures rise, even exceeding 1.5 degrees centigrade, and marine heatwaves continue. We still have a long way to go before 2023, which scientists warn could be the hottest year ever recorded. This is our reality. And yet our current politicians do not seem to be acting with the urgency and commitment that the situation requires.
The recently released government programme in Finland is an example of this. While it is promising to see that environmental issues are on the agenda, it is unfortunately not enough. We need much stronger and more ambitious targets. We need a complete energy transition that takes into account both human and natural needs and, above all, we need action and the tools to act. I find it extremely problematic that the government programme also reduces immigration and the reception of climate refugees. We need to welcome our fellow human beings from other parts of the world because they possess knowledge and perspectives that broaden our horizons and make us more humble. The climate and biodiversity crisis is global and we cannot close our borders and emotions.
I hope that our new government on the Åland Islands has the courage to address the necessary and literally ”burning” issues. Åland has the opportunity to be a positive example for the whole of Europe and the world if it decides to work and act actively for it.
In this transition, we also need to ensure that we take care of our planet and our biodiversity in a sustainable way. This means protecting our forests, seas, meadows, natural areas and
our water systems, which are crucial to the health and survival of our planet. The Baltic Sea is our closest and clearest example. The Baltic Sea is in dire straits and at the same time we are exploiting its scarce resources for resilience, making recovery even more difficult to achieve. We must both protect and help, it is our duty as citizens and future carers of the planet.
Right now, the transition to a resilient economy is hampered by a lack of funding for nature-inclusive solutions. We saw a major replanting of trees after the fall of the Roman Empire, where regenerative and permacultural approaches to building ecosystems as a whole were adopted. This approach allowed both humans and other species to recover and created the conditions for life. We need to return to this kind of thinking and action.
The future is here, and it is time for all of us to stand up and take responsibility. We must create a society where all voices are heard and respected, regardless of gender, ethnicity, socio-economic background or age. A society where everyone has access to clean and healthy environments, and where no one is left behind in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss.
To quote Socrates: ”The secret of change is to focus all your energy not on fighting the old but on building the new”.
